The 7th instalment of my Chris Things “Match of the Week” Art series & a very timely one. As some of you may know, one of my all-time favourite Professional Wrestlers, Chris Hero is making his highly anticipated comeback this Friday night for West Coast Pro in San Francisco - reigniting his sensational series with the always fantastic Timothy Thatcher. This inspired me to go down a rabbit hole of their great matches of years gone by & I came across a bloody rip-snorter!
This bout took place on August 29th, 2015 in the 1st round, Night 2 of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla’s Battle of Los Angeles 2015 at the iconic American Legion Post #308 in scenic Reseda, California.
There’s so much I could say about my deep love for PWG, the magical venue that was Legion Larry’s lovely little Legion Hall, the PWG faithful & how long I’ve admired Hero as one of the best to ever do it (& also just such a rad dude on a personal level), but let’s talk about the match!
A few matches deep into their series already, but their first ever match in PWG, this was just such a treat to watch in every way. Sometimes certain guys have a very special & unique chemistry. And that was the case here for sure. These two have such a great set of contrasting yet complimentary styles. Just a masterclass of grappling, strikes, psychology & escalation of violence. And so many beautifully subtle little things (teases, call-backs, etc.) that reward a very close level of viewer-attention.
