MOTW 153: Tenzan vs Kojima
"M.O.T.W. #153: Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs. Satoshi Kojima" - ink & digital illustration
Today brings us to the 153rd of our Chris Things Art 'Match of the Week' illustration series. And this week we continue along my very slow G1 Climax36 watch for an incredibly special non-tournament match that was perhaps the most memorable match I've watched this year; the retirement of puroresu legend; Hiroyoshi Tenzan!
This heartwarming affair took place as the main event of Day 18 of this years' New Japan Pro Wrestling G1 on August 15th before a sold out Tokyo Ryogoku Sumo Hall.
So this has got to be one of the most emotionally touching matches that I've ever seen. This is another of those ones that just transcends 'Pro Wrestling'. Here, we have a very broken down Tenzan - quite literally on his last legs, willing a broken body on to have one last match against his greatest rival, before an incredibly appreciative audience.
Such a beautiful atmosphere all-round. If anything, it was the limitations that made this so unique & memorable. Kojima was so perfect as Tenzan's final opponent. Their long-standing friendship was such a lovely part of this. Kojima willing his friend & long-time tag-partner through a retirement match he could be proud of.
Tenzan showed so much heart & courage here. Especially in those moments of falling down and getting back up over and over. He willed that broken body far beyond it's capabilities. For the sake of a proper goodbye to his wrestling-life. These days, I am far less impressed by those spectacular athletic displays & more about matches that have heart. And this was one of the most heart-filled matches that I've ever witnessed.
The post-match retirement ceremony was as moving & perfect as you'd expect. Takashi Iizuka, my gosh that was amazing!! I loved this all so much!
ENJOY!
