MOTW 150: LA Park vs Dr Wagner Jr
"M.O.T.W. #150: LA Park vs. Dr Wagner Jr" - ink & digital illustration
Today brings us to the big 150th edition of our Chris Things Art 'Match of the Week' illustration series! And for this milestone (also commemorating the big news earlier this week of 'The Joy of Lucha Libre' - Sep 26 at Superwow Gallery) we travel back 20 years to Arena Mexico for a period of Lucha Libre Mexicana that I have so much love & nostalgia for.
This 2 out of 3 falls Lucha classic between two of the greatest Luchadores to ever grace a ring took place on June 16th, 2006; the main event of CMLL's big weekly Friday night show at Arena Mexico.
So despite us getting down to the nitty gritty of this years' G1, for all the reasons mentioned above, this week I just felt like watching some Lucha! And there is little that gives me the joy than that of going back to the lucha that I first fell in love with. Here we have two of my all-time favourites in a match that is so totally enjoyable in many ways!
Career rivals, Park & Wagner had been feuding long before this match & long after. Even to this day things are far from over. Maybe not necessarily their "best" match but certainly one that shows the magic when they are in the ring together, this shows off what makes both of them so great & just gives off the incredible vibes in spades! Two of the most charismatic Luchadores you ever did see! Both incredible rudos but also two guys who have a heartfelt connection with the Mexican lucha faithful.
We get hard hitting wrestling, great brawling & general wild-ness, shockingly beautiful dives, great heart & just taking the audience through a roller coaster of emotions that to me is what lucha is all about. As much as others may not have cared for it, I even adored the finish & the classic rudo-referee antics of the fantastically named senior referee; 'Baby Richard'!
This rocks so hard in many ways & for me personally, very authentically represents "The Joy of Lucha Libre".
ENJOY!
