It's week 8 of my “Match on the Week” art series and as a big-time lover of Mexican Wrestling, I’m proud to finally be bringing you a proper south-of-the-border Lucha Libre edition!
This superb bout took place on January 20th, 2023 on CMLL’s big weekly Friday night Arena Mexico show in Mexico City. Set up the week prior with a short but fiery impromptu match, which lead to Rocky’s challenge for Volador's World Historic Welterweight Championship here. And it was just a fantastic match in every way!
A textbook Professional Wrestling lesson in creating crowd investment & building that to a fever-pitch. As spectacular as the match itself was (including some amazing dives, a superplex off the ringside barricade & a beautiful flying armbar), it was really the crowd-heat that made this one for me. It felt like being transported back in time to one of the white-hot Wrestling Territories of years gone by like Memphis Wrestling at the Mid South Colosseum or Mid South Wrestling in Louisiana for a big JYD match.
In summary, everything about this was just such a treat to see. I’d say an easy Lucha Libre ‘Match of the Year’ contender. Very worth going out of your way to see. It can be found for free on CMLL’s official YouTube page. …Man, I can’t wait to finally go to Arena Mexico one day soon!
