Today brings us to the 156th of our Chris Things Art 'Match of the Week' illustration series. And this week, (the week of 'The Joy of Lucha Libre' at Superwow Gallery AND the Mexican National Day of Lucha Libre) I was of course in the mood to watch some LUCHA! And I'll be gosh-darned if this wasn't one of the most joyous matches I've watched in a long while!
This totally perfect, classic dos de tres caidas bout for the WWA World Welterweight Championship took place on October 22nd, 2004, at CMLL's big weekly Friday night show at Arena Mexico.
So this era of CMLL & of Lucha in general is chock full of nostalgia for me personally as this is when I first fell in love with Lucha Libre Mexicana. The overall vibes here are just off the charts! There are so many elements that are sadly no longer part of the modern-day CMLL presentation. From the noise-makers, to the rudo fan section, the amazing lawless unlicensed commercial music entrance themes, to even the 2/3 falls that are becoming more & more of a thing of the past. But it is all here alive & well in this wonderful match. Just an incredible time-capsule to a very cool time in Lucha.
The match itself is also just a thing of beauty. Classic-style lucha that builds & flows so flawlessly. I am such a fan of both Santito & of the rudo maestro, Averno. And both are so great here!! The 41 year old Son of the Saint (& one of the greatest Professional Wrestlers of all time in his own right) gives a masterclass in Lucha here. And the younger Averno certainly lives up to the challenge. Watching it, this felt like a very special match to him at this point in his career; a Mano a Mano bout against one of the all-time greats.
Every part of this 2/3 falls was absolutely beautiful to watch.
