Hi friends! We’re back for the 44th edition of our ‘Match of the Week’ illustration series & this week I’ve got a ‘WRESTLING-CLUB’ special edition bloody doozy of a match for you!
The wild & crazy 'Texas Bronco' vs the King of Memphis took place for the Continental Wrestling Association on April 6th, 1981 at the home of Memphis Wrestling, the famed Mid South Coliseum, in Memphis, TN, before 0 fans.
So this was one of the matches that I included in my play list for the very first of my ‘Wrestling-Club w/ Chris Things’ events & it proved to be very much my favourite of the evening!
This whole thing is magical. From the promo leading up to it, to the actual ‘match’, to Terry’s follow up revenge promo. It kind of goes beyond what I view as great Professional Wrestling. I know it’s such a tired cliche, but I really feel that this whole thing is actually ‘art’. This is really a one-man show, where Terry gives an Andy Kaufman-esque performance of a lifetime. Just one of the best things I ever have seen, that just keeps getting better with every rewatch. Like we need more reasons why Terry was the absolute greatest!
I’ve also got to hand it to the greatest Pro Wrestling commentator of all time, Lance Russell. He really makes this work in such a special way. His interplay with Terry & overall disgust by the end of this thing was so darn wonderful. His disappointed, disgusted throwaway “oh god” line near the end got me so good! ...Jerry Lawler is also pretty great I guess 😂.
Some matches are just amazing to see, but you forget them a week later. Other matches (& moments) like this will stay with you for a lifetime.
