On the way to the upcoming Way of the Blade sequel, here’s another flashback to an illustration & match that I adore from the original (from the great guys at Hybrid Shoot, written by the rad Phil Schneider, illustrated by yours truly!).
This fantastic Puerto Rican bloodbath, feud blow-off steel cage match took place on March 14th, 1987 at the Mets Pavilion Coliseum in Guaynabo, San Juan, for the WWC Universal Heavyweight Championship.
Okay so I think is my favourite Puerto Rican &/or Colón match that I've ever seen! This is the blow-off to what I've read to be a pretty epic feud between the all-time legend/top star of Puerto Rico, Colón & Chicky Starr's latest hired thug, one of my all-time favourite wrassler's in Stan Hansen. While I definitely do need to go back & watch some of their other matches that lead to this one, this was so darned great in & of itself.
I think it encapsulates all of the great things that you hear about Puerto Rican Wrestling; the blood & violence, the rabid crowd & the absolutely incredible level of heat. It also really captures that big time bloody cage match, rivalry blow-off magic that you sadly just don't see any more. I remember loving this a whole bunch at the time of illustrating the book. This one really is representational of the proper magic of the original Way of the Blade for me - that being the wonderful, eclectic variety of professional wrestling goodness!
