MOTW 140: Zandokan Jr vs Villano III Jr
"M.O.T.W. #140: Zandokan Jr vs Villano III Jr" - ink & digital illustration
Today brings us to the 140th edition of our Chris Things Art 'Match of the Week' illustration series! And this week we travel back to Arena Mexico for a modern Lucha classic!
This super-fun match took place just last week; the main event of May 29th's Friday Night CMLL show & the "Copa Jr. VIP 2026" finals.
So while everyone was talking about another Lucha match this past weekend (don't worry, I'll get to it), another absolutely wonderful, gem of a match took place at 'La Catedral' that nowhere near enough people are talking about!
This one came about in a unique fashion. As the big Cibernetico qualifying match took place the prior week week & my returning current favourite CMLL rudo, Zandokan Jr. made it all the way to being the third man left but was just edged out of the final between Villano III Jr. & Atlantis Jr. - Atlantis then unfortunately got hurt & fortune shined on everyone's favourite Lucha pirate getting the spot. And my gosh, they certainly made the most of it!
I really enjoyed this one because of the energy. There are no venues in the world with quite the same energy as a packed out Arena Mexico & this was next level for two guys who the Catedral faithful have picked to lead the next generation in a big featured match. As with many Zandokan Jr. matches, the rudo vs tecnico vibes were so good. After starting out in a classic Lucha Libre back & forth, this ended up just going to some nutty PWG vibes places - including a mind-blowing missed moonsault to the outside that certainly created some chatter. The finish also just came off so perfect!
As a fan of the incredible OG Los Villanos, I am very happy to see that lineage carrying CMLL into the next generation. Also, so happy that Zandokan Jr is back! Viva los rudos!! Fire up that CMLL sub & give it a watch!!
ENJOY!!
