Today brings us to the 139th edition of our Chris Things Art 'Match of the Week' illustration series! And this week we travel to the outer-Melbourne suburb of East Burwood for a totally surreal match that I was lucky enough to see in person just last week!
This absolutely wild 'Lucha-Extrema' battle took place last Friday, May 22nd at BCW 69: "Lucha Downunder" Noche Uno at the Whitehorse Club in East Burwood, VIC, Australia.
So this entire experience was just so surreal! As soon as I heard that my hero was coming to wrestle in Australia, I knew that I needed to be there. Luckily enough, my partner, Cailin's favourite wrestler also just happens to be L.A. Park, so she was shockingly keen on us flying to Melbourne & making a weekend of it.
Getting to see the original LaParka in Australia felt like such a fever dream to start, but getting a singles Lucha Extrema match against Australian Deathmatch legend, Mad Dog McCrea was something else! From the moment both walked through the curtain you could feel the magic in that room. It's rare that I get that proper feeling of excitement these days, but man, the Chairman really brings that special aura. Especially in such a unique setting.
The match absolutely rocked! It was exactly the pure chaos that I was hoping for. Mad Dog was just the most perfect opponent for Park possible on this night & I am just so grateful for having witnessed it in person! There were various moments of fans needing to quickly get out of the way to avoid this uncontrollable brawl ending up on top of them. They knocked the ringside barricade over. We got the brawling, the chairs, the tables, the real venue bin, a fan's real crutch & of course the big moment of the flaming table!
Man, this was everything I could've hoped for! Then afterwards I got to meet my hero & give him some art that I created of him. What a night!
