Another of my favourite illustrations from the original Way of the Blade book & another match that is just fantastic!

We're back to the classic Lucha Libre Apuestas 'Mask vs Mask' bloodbath-goodness for this weeks' instalment & I'll be gosh-darned if this isn't another perfect example of just how wonderful this type of match can be!

'La Leyenda de Plata', El Hijo Del Santo is just total Lucha Libre royalty, winner of SIXTY SIX Apuestas matches and one of the best to ever do it. The son of likely the most important Professional Wrestling cultural icon in history, he somehow ended up as maybe an even better an in-ring professional wrestler than his father! Espanto Jr. was no schlub himself; the successor to the original Espanto and an excellent luchador in his own right; a key player for UWA/'El Toreo' and Lucha Libre AAA and uncle of notable current luchador, La Sombra/Andrade El Idolo. He would actually go on to become El Santo Negro as well as the first ever Pentagon (of Pentagon Jr/Penta El Cero Miedo fame). This match actually paid tribute to the famed original Mask vs Mask match between El Santo and Espanto.

This match is just everything you want out of a good old bloody mask vs mask match. It is also an excellent starting point for anyone wanting to explore this delightful Pro Wrestling rabbit-hole, as it's totally awesome even if you know nothing about either competitor. I've read that these two would go on to have a fantastic rivalry with many other great matches in UWA & AAA that I very much need to check out myself.
