The Moondogs vs The Fabulous Ones (Way of the Blade Art Print)
"The Fabulous Ones (Stan Lane & Steve Keirn) vs. The Moondogs (Moondog Rex & Moondog Spot)" - ink & digital illustration
On the way to the upcoming Way of the Blade sequel, here’s another flashback to an illustration & match that I'm all about from the original (from the great guys at Hybrid Shoot, written by the rad Phil Schneider, illustrated by yours truly!).
This so quintessentially ‘Memphis’ match (if you’d call it that) took place on June 13th, 1983 at the home of Memphis Wrestling; the Mid South Colosseum for the Fabs' AWA Southern Tag Team Championships.
So there is actually a lot to like here for a match that only goes about 2 & a half minutes before a double DQ finish. I really adore both of these teams. Each representing a totally different side of that Memphis wrasslin' magic. First, we’ve got the wild, seemingly inbred, Appalachian mountain-men - complete with their giant bone signature foreign objects. And then their exact opposites in amazingly camp ‘ladies-men’, pretty-boys (who just happen to be one of the absolute greatest, most influential tag-teams of all-time for my money) in the Fabs. …Can we talk about those incredible music videos?!
This whole thing was just totally wild, bloody & out of control in the best of ways. So much of what I truly adore about southern wrasslin’! It gets thrown out real quick but was hot as heck while it lasted & you better be sure everyone’s paying their $5 to see the next bloody chapter, whenever they’re next back at the Mid South Colosseum!
I was talking to Cousin-Ben the other day about how much current mainstream American Wrestling kind of sucks right now but how it is so important to remember that big-time American Wrasslin’ was & can be an absolutely wonderful thing when done right. I feel like this glimpse into the Moondogs vs the Fabs is an excellent example of that!
ENJOY!!
