Eddie Guerrero vs JBL (Way of the Blade Art Print)
“Eddie Guerrero vs. JBL” - ink & digital illustration
On the way to the upcoming Way of the Blade sequel, here’s another flashback to an illustration & match that I’m quite fond of from the original (from the great guys at Hybrid Shoot, written by the rad Phil Schneider, art by yours truly!).
This surprisingly blood-soaked, hate-filled WWE gore-fest of a grudge-match took place on May 16th, 2004 at WWE's Judgement Day Pay Per View at the Staples Centre, in Los Angeles, CA.
I and likely many others have very fond memories of this match. From the far-too-short, but still wonderful WWE Championship reign of 'Latino Heat'. I feel this is probably the best match of John Bradshaw Layfield's career - or at least what I recall of it. The kickoff to his honestly pretty amazing J. R. Ewing meets Ted Dibiase meets Stan Hansen character that took him from a fondly remembered 'WWF Attitude era' mid-card act, to the main event scene of the up-north territory.
JBL was the perfect hated foil for the totally amazing crowd favourite that was Eddie Guerrero at this time. Looking back, most of Eddie's greatest matches are as a bad-guy, so it kind of feels like a treat to look back and remember just what a fantastic babyface that he really could be. This whole thing is just the perfect, white-hot, violent as heck comeuppance story. That moment when the leaking faucet, crimson mask adorned Eddie finally get's the chair and the dastardly JBL is cowering, begging for forgiveness! Eddie & JBL had the crowd at a fever pitch. Moments like this just sum up so much of the greatness of Professional Wrestling. Man, this ruled!
ENJOY!!
