So here we are, we have officially made it to the ONE HUNDREDTH edition of our ‘Match Of The Week’ illustration series! And true to this concept, I really never would have thought an 'up north territory' match would be the big 100, but this just happened to be the most enjoyable thing that I watched this week so here we are!
This wonderfully vicious, struggle-filled affair took place on August 2nd of this year, as the main event of Summerslam 2025 (Night 1) at the Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
So I absolutely adored every part of this! This was so the opposite of what I have come to expect from 'The Fed' in the most glorious of ways. This was the rugged, painful, STIFF Pro Wrestling goodness that I really love. No bells & whistles & convoluted storylines & sequences, just hard-nosed, gritty WRASSLIN'! And that made me so darned happy to see!
I'm such a sucker for the whole ageing gunslinger trying to hold on story. And I felt this was done so well here. Punk enduring some absolutely heinous punishment, finding clever, Wiley vet ways to get back on top, only for it to not be enough & Big Van Walter keeps putting him back down. Until finally finding that the big miracle moment.
I loved how gritty this felt, how chock full of physicality it was, the emotion, the amount of time it got, the drama, the story & of course the Crimson Mask! This was everything I love about Professional Wrestling!
In hind-site I look back & think how I could have found some really classic underground 'deep-cut' for the big 100th MOTW, but I think it is much more fitting that it wound up being something like this that I in no way would have expected, but just organically was the thing that brought me the most joy to watch this past week. It's so nice to get these surprises.
