On the way to the upcoming Way of the Blade sequel, here's another flashback to an illustration & match that I love dearly from the original (from the great guys at Hybrid Shoot, written by the rad Phil Schneider, illustrated by yours truly!).
This truly wonderful wrasslin' bout took place on March 23rd, 1997 at WWF WrestleMania 13: 'Heat' from the Rosemont Horizon on the outskirts of the ever-lovely city of Chicago, IL.
Okay, so to start off, this may be my favourite WWF/WWE/WrestleMania match of all time (either this or the Bret vs Owen mania match 3 years prior at WrestleMania X). I really feel that in terms of encapsulating a 'story' in a professional wrestling match, this is just about as good as it gets. Perhaps the most masterful 'double-turn' to ever occur from bell to bell. Whereby the good-guy becomes bad & the bad guy becomes the crowd favourite. The lead up to this match is also I think the best build to a match that has ever taken place in World Wrestling Federation history. The actual wrestling is also just so totally badass, gritty, physical, crazy-heated & most importantly, feels like a fight. There are so many things that I can say about why & how I loved this SO DARNED MUCH! So I've got to just stop myself here or I'll go on forever.
Artist's Note: As one of the most famous & well-known matches of the book (& really, one of the greatest visuals throughout wrestling history), there was quite a bit of pressure that I felt to do this one justice. I hope I did. Either way, this one still makes me smile to look at.
