This week we continue on down the Sabu rabbit-hole for what was the 'Main Event' of my most recent Wrestling Club event at the ever-lovely The Scratch Bar this past Sunday evening.
This incredible No-Ropes Barbed Wire ECW World Heavyweight Championship Match took place on August 9th, 1997, the infamous main event of ECW 'Born to be Wired' at the world-famous ECW Arena in South Philly, PA.
Man, what to say about this one?! So I vividly remember excitedly getting the UK release DVD of this show in the mail as a teenager & watching it from start to finish. At that time I hadn't seen anything remotely like it. And to this day, I still don't think anything touches this match with quite the same kind of magic.
For this Club night, I really wanted to have a special Sabu tribute match. And after much deliberation, I knew it couldn't be anything other than this one.
Everyone talks about the insane level of extreme violence of it (& rightfully so). But for me, what makes this do special is the magical aura that this match brings. The real magic of Pro Wrestling to me is making you forget about the illusion & capturing you in the moment in a real way. And this match does it like no other. To put a jam packed ECW Arena of the most die-hard, ruthless Wrestling fans to silence is really an incredible feat. The gritty, unhinged, unpolished struggle & intensity is unlike anything you will ever see.
The human sacrifice for art element of this is something that will also stay with me forever. This is art in the highest form to me. Bravo to two of the best to ever do this thing. I adore this ugly monstrosity of a match so very much.
