this week we travel back to 2002 for one of my very favourite matches of the 'Homicidal-Suicidal-Genocidal, Death-Defying-Maniac'.
This positively delightful crimson-soaked gore fest took place on December 20th, 2002 in the ECW love-letter that was the early incarnation of MLW. At their 'King Of Kings' event at the wonderfully grimey, historic ECW venue that was the War Memorial in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
So this match rocks hard for a few reasons. Firstly, I loved this era of MLW so much back in the day. I'd get all the tapes in the mail & adored every single bit of the weird 'Hybrid Wrestling' mix of ECW nostalgia, Puroresu, Lucha Libre & some of the best of the white-hot early 2000s Indie Wrestling scene of the time.
Secondly, this is just the perfect bridge from the amazing Chairman of WCW La Parka, to the Lucha-Extrema wild-man badass don; LA Park that we all know & love.
Finally, I thought this a super-fitting tribute to the recently departed Sabu. This crazy wild brawl really captured so much of what made the Arabian Madman from Bombay, Michigan so totally magical to watch. It was a thrill a minute & you never knew what was coming next. Man, Sabu was special. R.I.P. to one of the realest ones there ever was.
Highly recommended viewing! This was somehow even better than I originally remember it being. The overall card is just such an acid dream to look at as well. Think I really need to rewatch the whole show.
