Once again, at the time of this piece I was still in the beautiful country of Mexico & that meant another IN-PERSON 'Lucha Libre Mexicana' special delivery for the 80th in our Chris Things 'Match of the Week' illustration series!
This tremendous CMLL World Trios Championship bout took place on Saturday, April 5th at the big '82nd Aniversario' of what's become one of my favourite arenas in the whole wide world; Arena Coliseo!
It also marks the 2nd week running where the delightfully odd mummy/pirate trio of 'Galeon Fantasma' has taken the M.O.T.W.!
So I almost didn't make it to this show, but an overbooked flight that resulted in me sadly missing the prior night's Arena Mexico Friday night show sealed the deal. And I ended up so darned happy that I did because this show bloody rocked!! There's nothing quite like a jam-packed Arena Coliseo. Such an electric, crazy hot crowd! And getting to catch it on as special a night as this was extra-cool!!
A special shout out to the luchadoras Cibernetico match that preceeded this that was also totally awesome! But this trios title match just blew me away in the best of ways.
As one of my longtime favs, it was so awesome to get to see Averno doing his thing in the flesh. Seeing him in person was seeing a master at work. Just everything that a great rudo should be! Mephisto & Euforia rocked it too as the perfect back up players. All round just an excellent rudo trio. This also felt like a real coming out party for everyone's fav luchador Mummy/Skeleton madman - Difunto, who had an incredible spotlight performance on this night. Zandokan Jr continues to solidify his standing as a top guy to carry El Consejo into the future. And Barboza is another one to watch. Love the pirate-beard mask!!
Overall, this was such a great, classic 2/3 falls trios bout. Highly recommended! I feel so lucky to have gotten to see this in-person in this incredible building!
