MOTW 73: Aja Kong vs. KAORU
"M.O.T.W. #73: Aja Kong vs. KAORU" - ink & digital illustration
Hi friends! We're back for another 'Wrestling Club' special edition (& a bloody doozy of a match if I do say so myself) for the 73rd instalment of our 'Match of the Week' illustration series!
This all-time classic, totally transcendent Professional Wrestling bout took place back on February 13th, 2000 for GAEA Japan, at their 'GAEA Big Destruction (Day 2)' event at one of my favourite wrestling venues in existence; Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
So after much deliberation, I picked this rather intense Joshi guttural display as the 'main event' of my latest in-person Wrasslin' Club event at The Scratch this past week. We had some other amazing matches on the night (including Kawada vs Taue, a terrific ECW Michi Pro 6 Man & that incredible ROH Ki vs Amazing Red match!) but this just felt like something else. Like sometimes you watch a match & it feels like something even 'more' than Pro Wrestling. This was that. I don't think I'll ever forget this match. And I'm proud to say that a lovely little dive bar full of Club devotees (& innocent regulars) might say the same.
I overheard one person at the bar during this one say "that made me feel things". And I don't think I could put it any better myself! If you haven't already, PLEASE watch this match! I think this might just be my new favourite Womens' Wrestling match of all time!
Artists note: this was a bit of a complex one to draw. Lots going on & some weird body angles. So that was a fun challenge. As always picking the moment was tough but I really like this visual in telling the story of this match & such a great little moment of the indestructible beast becoming human. It was also just so much fun to draw Kong!
ENJOY!!
