I’m pleased to join you once again on this rainy Brisbane morning for the 60th addition to our ‘Match of the Week’ illustration series.
This weeks’ spectacular Texas-Wrasslin'-Roadhouse-Fisticuffs-Brawl of a Professional Wrestling match took place on November 9th, 1982 at All Japan Pro Wrestling’s ‘Super Power Series 1982’ in Korakuen Hall, Tokyo.
So I believe this to be the first EVER Japanese singles match between these two wild Texans who I completely adore. And WHAT a way to kick it off!!
As you’d expect, this thing is just totally off the rails from the get-go! The Lariat attacks The Funker immediately & Terry responds in kind. From that point, this thing is basically a fight scene out of Roadhouse. I think my most-loved thing is the absolutely spectacular punches & the reactions to said punches on both sides. This really defines the art of the punch! There’s a particularly brutal series of short toe-kicks & knee-drops from Stan to the back of Terry’s head on the mat that really took things to a whole new level. Terry’s selling of such things was of course just immaculate; flopping around on the mat like a fish out of water. There really were so many of these weird & wonderful ‘Terry-isms’ throughout!
The Korakuen crowd is totally electric for the whole thing. Stan is an absolute monster & Terry is the most beloved gaijin good-guy that you ever did see! The post-match is also just as wild & amazing as the match that preceded it. Hansen demolishing folks left & right & some totally tremendous cameos from Jumbo Tsuruta & Giant Baba.
Artists Note: This was a lot of fun to do. Drawing both Terry & Stan is always such a treat. But the colour scheme felt like it took FOREVER to come together. I’m pretty happy with it now but darn it, that took some doing!
