So it’s Friday here in overcast Brisbane, Australia & that means I’ve got a new edition of our ‘Match of the Week’ illustration series for ya!
This terrifically simple yet cool-as-heck NWA World Heavyweight Championship match took place on June 16th, 1993 at World Championship Wrestling’s 'Clash of the Champions #23' event, live on TBS, at a building so synonymous with WCW; the Scope, in Norfolk, VA.
So this match was so darn fun! It captures much of the magic of that early 90s WCW period that I love so much. We have the excellent duo of Jesse 'The Body' Ventura & Tony Schiavone on commentary, Michael Buffer adding that extra special atmosphere on ring announcing & a great, super hyped WCW crowd that were always appreciative of some bad-ass wrasslin’! I also always loved that shiny entrance curtain & just in general this period of WCW colour-scheme aesthetic so much!
It’s so rad to finally see Barry with the big gold strap. He was just so perfect at this time, amongst a super stacked, all-time great roster. Everything he does looks so solid & damn he could move!
2 Cold is also very high on my list of fav’s. Easily one of the coolest wrestlers to ever do it! From this wonderful WCW run, to his work in NJPW, to an incredible run in ECW, to his super fun & underrated time in the early days of Pro Wrestling NOAH. 2 Cold will always be the man for me (no matter how many folks he stabs). That springboard 450 dude!!
This match really brings out the best in both dudes. 2 Colds’ incredibly fun offence & Barry just being the consummate Southern big man workhorse. Excellent finish too! This is high on my list of things to show folks who say this era of early 90s WCW wasn’t totally awesome.
