Today brings us to the 138th edition of our Chris Things Art 'Match of the Week' illustration series! And this week we travel to the 2011 Mexican indie scene for a recently unearthed deep-cut gem Llaveo clinic!
This absolutely wonderful display of Llaveo mastery took place on August 27th, 2011 for the now defunct Lucha Pop promotion at Arena Lopez Mateos in Tlalnepantla, Estado de Mexico.
So first & foremost I need to thank the amazing Black Terry Jr. for sharing the never before released footage of this excellent match as part of his ongoing weekly releases of matches that he filmed personally from ringside! This felt like such a gift!!
This match is fascinating in many ways. Here we see the elder Llaveo legend, esteemed Lucha trainer & patriarch of the Apache dynasty, Gran Apache testing the Llaveo skills of a young but already extremely talented Angelico (of Lucha Underground fame). Angelico more than holds his own against the crafty legend but the back & forth clinic is just such a beautiful thing to see!
I have so much love for this style of wrestling. And of course I always have a deep love for the aging masters. The youth vs experience dynamic here is just so cool & so well done. It's a great showing for the supremely skilled Apache but also for the crazy interesting luchador that is Angelico. Overall, this just felt so fresh & fun to watch. I even saw some way cool counters that id never witnessed before! Including the pictured moment of this illustration!!
I loved every moment of this & most definitely need to check out more Gran Apache! Highly recommended! THANK YOU once more to Black Terry Jr.!
