We’re up to week 13 of my little old “Match of the Week” art series & I’ve gone down a hole of nostalgia! On from last weeks’ amazing Low-Ki vs. KENTA match that brought me so much joy, I continued down the rabbit hole of mid-2000s indie wrestling goodness & worked my way to a bloody classic between two of my very favourites & two the absolute greats of that era. We find ourselves in the sleazy, gritty confines of Combat Zone Wrestling & also my first ever M.O.T.W. selection taking place within the magical walls of ECW Arena!
This totally badass match took place on May 14th, 2005 at CZW’s Best Of The Best V: “I Can Feel It In The Air Tonight” (great name!) event at the ECW Arena/Alhambra Arena/Viking Hall in scenic South Philly. This one came in the 2nd round of the annual CZW Bestof the Best tournament, which was quite the deal at the time!
Start to finish, this was just completely awesome; everything that was so great about indie wrasslin’ at the time. Stiff strikes, big chair-shots, big head-drops & just the perfect likeable underdog hero in everyone's favourite 'Generic Luchador' fighting up against the ultimate end-game big-boss, badass, complete arse-hole bad-guy in Dragon. I of course LOVED every moment!
Artists’ Note: As a massive fan of Extreme Championship Wrestling, it was really fun for me to illustrate this amazing atmosphere venue so near to my heart. This mid-2000's era of it as basically the “Miller Lite” arena was wonderfully strange; especially the famed ECW “Crows Nest” becoming the “Miller Lite Skybox”! Same for the totally “South Philly cross-section of humanity in the crowd. So once again, I gave the background a bit more detail to the background than usual to capture a bit of this magical setting so synonymous with mid-2000's independent wrestling.
