MOTW 129: El Satánico vs Atlantis
"M.O.T.W. #129: El Satánico vs. Atlantis" - ink & digital illustration
Today brings us to the 129th edition of our Chris Things Art 'Match of the Week' illustration series! And this week we travel to the gritty world of 1984 #CMLL for a classic El Satánico Dos De Tres Caidas #LuchaLibreMexicana bloodbath!
This incredible rookie vs veteran crimson-soaked FIGHT took place on January 20th, 1984 in CMLL (EMLL at the time) at historic Arena Coliseo in the Historic District of Mexico City.
As we approach the Infernal-One's big retirement match tomorrow night, I was feeling like watching some Satánico classics. When I came across this one, I knew it was going to be great! A singles match against a Luchador he would have much history with over the years and will actually be having his final ever match against tomorrow night - in addition to BLUE PANTHER!
Here we see the rudo maestro in his prime against a 21-year-old Atlantis, fresh out of being "rookie of the year" the year prior! And I'll be danged if this is not one of the greatest rookie tecnico vs rudo veteren matches that I've ever seen!
This match is a wonderful example of exactly why Satánico is one of the greatest & most influential rudos of all time! His ferocity, his cruel-ness, his sneaky, subtle tricks & his wonderful selling for a significantly less experienced opponent is just so cool to watch. Atlantis despite his inexperience is so great here too. While he may not be quite as advanced as he would become with his moves per say, he already had that fantastic, undeniable heart that we all know & love. In fact, I think his youth & naivety kind of makes this.
The moment where it gets just grossly crimson-soaked is also just an all-timer! Following Satánico tearing the mask & biting the young Idolo De Los Ninos, a gusher ensues so intense that in an amazing Kill Bill-esque moment, the match cuts to black & white. We are told they are experiencing "broadcast difficulties"! So good!
Esto es LUCHA! Highly recommended!!
ENJOY!!
