We're up to the 110th edition of our illustration series & this week we travel to 1997 World Championship Wrestling for a classic Monday night Lucha Libre rollercoaster ride! This crazily star-studded trios match took place on December 22nd, 1997, on WCW Monday Nitro at the Macon Coliseum in Macon, GA.
In doing my research for our upcoming Wrestling Club w/ Chris Things' at The Scratch ("MONDAY NIGHT GRAPPS!" special), I came across what may be the most perfect encapsulation of the pure magic that was those totally nuts Nitro Lucha showcase sprints.
Featuring a lineup of insanely talented & influential luchadores, this match is everything you would expect & more! As was always the case in these matches, my only criticism is that it didn't get to go longer. But dude, if this is the time allocation you are given, this thing totally hits it out of the park for its' minutes!
It's so much fun! I think it is actually impossible to not enjoy this match. Anchored by one of my all time favourite luchadores, the 'Chairman of WCW', the original & best; LA Park. We also get an electric showcase of the magic of prime 90s Rey Jr. But everyone is just so perfect here. Even Juvy's insane, likely accidental spike poison rana! ...And let's never stop talking about how incredible (& super underrated) Silver King was! And despite some distraction early on from the Flock , the classic red-hot WCW Georgia crowd really added to things too.
This thing brought me so much joy & the best kind of nostalgia. I hope it can for you too! Man, Nitro rocked! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
