Hi pals! We’re back for the 51st edition of our little ol’ ‘Match of the Week’ illustration series & as we approach a FULL YEAR of this nonsense, I’m very pleased to bring you a classic Lucha Libre ‘Apuestas Match’ of the highest order!

This EPIC Mascara Contra Mascara, 4-way elimination bout took place this past week on September 13th, 2024 on the biggest Mexican Wrestling event of the year; CMLL’s 91st Aniversario event at 'La Catedral De La Lucha Libre, Arena Mexico.

There really is nothing like a big Apuestas match in the world’s most famous & historic Professional Wrestling arena! From start to finish, this whole thing just felt magical.

Hechicero is clearly one of my big time favourites & for good reason; I feel after this one, he’s definitely in conversation for ‘Wrestler of the Year’. I’ve been a big fan of Valiente’s for what feels like the longest time. Esfinge did pretty good for his relative level of experience. And man, Euforia has really wowed me these past few years & this was no different. Just a career-defining match!

I heard mixed feelings on the way they do the eliminations these days. Whereby the 1st two luchadores eliminated are out of the match & it’s down to the final two who risk it all. But I personally love it! All four fighting for the honour of being in the biggest Apuestas match of the year, on the grandest stage of them all!

As it came down to the big final two of Hechicero & Euforia, his was just so wonderful in the best of ways! Amazing drama that built to an absolute fever pitch. And boy, those big emotional post-match unmaskings never fail to get me in all of the feels. Highly recommended!!
