Hi friends! We’re up to week 24 of our “Match of the Week” series & I’ve gone back to an absolute classic for this weeks’ edition.
This total all-timer of a Pro Wrestling match took place on January 15th, 1999 on Day 11 of All Japan Pro Wrestling’s “AJPW New Year Giant Series 1999” at the Yokohama Bunka Gymnasium.
Man, what can you say about this one other than “hot dang, that was AWESOME!” This match was significant in many ways. It was Vader’s first big singles match during this great career-revival run in All Japan. It was also his first ever singles match against one of the greatest of all time (no exaggeration there), in Kobashi. It was also Vader’s first singles match after a terribly depressing run in the New York territory. So as a big-time Vader fan, this was just so great to see! Likewise in terms of career progression of Kobashi - another of my all-time favourites.
The actual match is just wonderful in every way; from Vader totally returning to his proper beast-form, to the amazing fire of Kobashi, to the absolutely raucous crowd. This was just a barn-burner on all fronts. I don’t know what more you could want out of a Professional Wrestling match. …& THAT German Suplex!! My gosh!
