Today brings us to the 144th edition of our Chris Things Art 'Match of the Week' illustration series! And this week we travel to 2017 All Japan Pro Wrestling during a modern golden age for the company for a celebration of a truly wonderful Professional Wrestler.
This balls-to-the-wall hellacious sprint of a hoss-fight took place on the opening night of an all-timer of a 2017 Champions Carnival, on April 16th, 2017 at Korakuen Hall.
So this past week we had another sad one with the passing of a great bloke & tremendous wrestler, the big Canadian Cowboy, Joe Doering - who fought hard through a long battle. I got watching some of my favourite Joe-San matches that really hammered home how special a pro wrestler he was.
This one took place during an amazing time for All Japan, under the direction of the great Jun Akiyama as the company was putting out, in my opinion, the best wrestling in the world at the time. Firing on all cylinders & again properly embracing the spectacular legacy of King's Road, we had an all-time great roster. Akiyama, Kento Miyahara, SUWAMA, Doering, Shuji Ishikawa, Zeus, Bodyguard, Kohei Sato, Takao Omori, Okabayashi & Sekimoto were an incredible combination.
If I was to pick one match to show people to try to exclaim how special Joe was, I'd have to pick this one. It is super short but so furious & physical. Both Joe & big dog Daisuke are just tremendous here. This is two big hosses clashing against one another in the most enjoyable, spectacularly physical manner possible. This is big man wrestling baby!
Hopefully this can encourage some folks down a Doering rabbit hole. So great! Rest easy Joe-san, you will be missed.
