Today brings us to the 133rd edition of our Chris Things Art 'Match of the Week' illustration series! And this week we travel to Mexico for a #LuchaExtrema battle of legends that I enjoyed very much!
This gritty, crimson-soaked Lucha brawl took place on September 30th, 2016 in the first "Elite" wrestling promotion, Lucha Libre Elite in Gimnasio Benito Juarez, Estado De Mexico.
So in preparation for both of these legendary luchadores' upcoming visit to my fair country (tickets officially purchased by the way), I was on another LA Park watching kick. And then I came across this uncut gem of a match. This was something of a tricky choice. Maybe not what many would consider a classically "great match", but one that I just enjoyed the absolute heck out of! And the more I think about it, that is what this thing is meant to be all about.
I totally adored so much of this. Full on uncontrollable wild-man rudo Park is just such a delight to watch in every way. The original (& best) La Parka has long been one of my favourite luchadores & pro wrestlers in general. There is just something about him that gives that Bruiser Brody/Super Dragon/Necro Butcher kinda sense of danger & not knowing what might happen like few others. And man that is on full display here.
The early goings of Park just beating the tar out of our hero, Blue Demon Jr. is something I will never forget. Demon is also just such a perfect hero in peril here too. I've very much enjoyed Blue Demon Jr.'s forey into the world of hardcore these past few years.
This felt dirty & intense & dangerous in all of the best ways. And my gosh, just some of the greatest torn mask crimson you ever will see!
The finish is not great to be kind but this match really was more than the sum of its parts (I think I'm using that saying correctly?). By the time we got that LUCHA EXTREMA chant, I was already sold. This match goes so hard!
