On the way to the upcoming Way of the Blade sequel, here's another flashback to an illustration & match that I quite adored from the original (from the great guys at Hybrid Shoot, written by the rad Phil Schneider, illustrated by yours truly!).
This tremendous, Southern Wrasslin' dog collar brawl of a match took place on December 27th, 1985 at Paul Boesch's Houston Wrestling at the Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston, Texas.
So I actually went back & watched every bit of this fantastic Mid South/Houston Wrestling mid-80s feud that I could possibly find & was bloody DELIGHTED with what I found. Starting with the amazing original 'Cowboy' Bill Watts Mid-South angle whereby Buzz actually comes to help out his buddy, 'Dirty' Dick Slater & girlfriend Dark Journey, who's honour has been besmirched by the 'good-guy', Duggan going on a misogynistic rant & the following melee that results in Duggan's girlfriend catching an 'accidental' elbow from Mad Dog. Man 80s wrestling was wild!
This leads to an incredible blood-feud between Mad Dog & Hacksaw that was just a delight to watch. First off is a MUST-SEE bloody, violent, No-DQ match from November 11th in New Orleans that I think might even have been better than the big dog collar match in question! We also get a great Coal-Miners' Glove match in Houston, leading to this one. The big Dog Collar match really is tremendous & there's just so much to love about it. Everything I love about 80s territory wrasslin'!
It's just so great to see Hacksaw in a more gritty, hard-nosed setting than the Disneyfied, plastic-fantastic world of WWF. Such a talented & amazingly charismatic dude! If you are not too familiar with Buzz Sawyer, PLEASE do yourself a favour & check him out! Just one of the very best wild, unhinged beasts of 80s wrestling & an amazing wrestler to boot!
