MOTW 63: Low Ki vs. Eddie Guerrero
“M.O.T.W. #63: Low Ki vs. Eddie Guerrero" - ink & digital illustration
Hi pals! I’m back for another on-location Melbourne, travelling edition to our ‘Match of the Week’ illustration series as I prepare for a big weekend with the Melbourne leg of the Oddities & Curiosities Expo.
This fantastic, super-interesting match between two of my big time favourites took place on November 30th, 2001 for ICW, at one of my all-time favourite venues, the NYC home of Extreme Championship Wrestling; the ‘Madhouse of Extreme’ a.k.a. the old Queens Elks Lodge.
So there was a lot to appreciate here. First & foremost, this was quite the significant match for Latino Heat, as I believe it marked his 1st match following his 2001 World Wrestling Federation departure & his big return to the indys. Against one of the greatest Indy wrestlers of all time IMO in Ki (who was just super fun to watch around this time)!
The general vibes here are just wonderful all-round - from seeing a one time only clash between two absolutely amazing wrasslers, to the iconic venue - right down to them walking out through the O.G. classic ECW entrance set (that somehow slid through the cracks of going to the ‘up north’ territory in bankruptcy court).
The in-ring side of this is just as great as you'd expect. It feels like a return to form for Eddie & his phenomenal ECW/Japan in-ring roots. Ki plays the plucky young underdog (with the coolest move set you ever did see) to perfection. Seeing Eddie being so giving here on his very 1st match on the American Indy Wrestling scene also makes me love him even more. Everything’s built up so well. This whole thing is just so badass!
Artists’ Note: once again, with a venue as close to my heart as this one, you knew I had to do more background detail than usual to capture that magic. It felt like it took forever but I think it was worth it. R.I.P Madhouse of Extreme ...I think it's a church now!
ENJOY!!
