MOTW 22: Sting vs Big Van Vader

$25.00 USD - $40.00 USD

"Chris Things M.O.T.W. #22: Sting vs Big Van Vader" - ink & digital illustration

We’re back for another edition of my “Match of the Week” art series & as ‘Sting-Fever’ has struck us all right now, I’ve chosen a match that I feel is highly appropriate.

This spectacular 'slobber-knocker' of a bout took place on July 12th, 1992 at World Championship Wrestling’s Great American Bash ‘92 event at the Albany Civic Center, in Albany, GA.

Upon giving it a ponder, I really do think that the Stinger’s greatest career-opponent was the Mastadon. Close contenders of course include Ric Flair, Great Muta & Cactus Jack but there is something about his matches with Vader that just hit at another level.

I actually did a deep dive & went right back to their first ever tv singles match on WCW Worldwide from earlier in the year (which I’d highly recommend as an excellent under 10 minute tv match). Before moving on to this one, as their first big PPV marquee singles match for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship - as well as all the fantastic lead-up promos & video packages of course! And man, this match was something else! Easily one of the best things I’ve seen in a long time. Wonderful physicality & a great story in the crowd-favourite world champion going into the match against the indestructible Goliath injured & far from 100%. This was just PERFECT in so many ways. It really showed off the very best of both men. The entire presentation & commentary by the super underrated duo of Jim Ross & Jesse 'The Body' Ventura really brought it all to the next level.

I maintain that 'Cowboy' Bill Watts was the best booker/head honcho that WCW ever had & the main event scene of WCW would never be as good as this for the remainder of the companies’ existence.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED VIEWING!
