MOTW 17: Kerry Von Erich vs Terry Gordy
"Chris Things M.O.T.W. #17: Kerry Von Erich vs Terry Gordy (NWA Championship)" - ink & digital illustration
We’re up to week 17 of my “Match of the Week” art series & I think I’ve got a pretty darned great, undiscovered gem here for you. I stumbled across this one after going down a World Class rabbit hole after the fantastic recent Iron Claw film & I was blown away!
This classic took place in one of my all-time favourite Territories, World Class Championship Wrestling on May 7th, 1984 in Fort Worth, Texas at the
Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum. Terry Gordy is the challenger for Kerry’s recently won NWA World Heavyweight Championship (just the prior day!). This is actually the only NWA title defence of Kerry’s that I’ve come across during his short reign following his big win over Ric Flair after David Von Erich’s untimely passing.
Here we see a glimpse of the all-time great Freebirds vs Von Erich's feud during just a white-hot period for World Class that will never be duplicated. Just an insanely hot crowd that was into the 'Modern Day Warrior' like he was the Beatles! (I don’t think anyone will ever be as over as the Von Erichs in Texas). Such a joy to watch, especially as a big Terry Gordy fan. Just mind-blowing how great he was at such a young age. Kerry was just fantastic here too. His teasing of & finally locking on the abdominal Iron Claw to an insane level of crowd applause just brought me so much joy. This match was everything!!
I highly recommend checking this one out for yourself. In can be found on YouTube under the title of “Kerry Von Erich vs Terry Gordy 1985” from the great CWAMemphis account.
