Today's the 125th edition of our Chris Things Art 'Match of the Week' illustration series! And this week we travel back to a golden age of Lucha Libre Mexicana; 90s CMLL for an all-time trios classic!
This wonderful in every which way Dos De Tres Caidas trios bout took place on April 26, 1996 at the famed architectural beauty that is Arena Coliseo in Centro Histórico, Mexico City.
So upon learning the very depressing news of CMLL eliminating the traditional captains fall element of their trios matches going forward, I decided to dive into some classic trios matches throughout history (which was such an awesome time!). And I feel that this one really captures the magic that is the unique cultural tradition of this match so bloody well!
We have such a pure 'Tecnico vs Rudo' dynamic that flows throughout - bolstered of course by the good Doctor. I've not seen much of Apollo Dantes but dang I enjoyed every little thing he did in this match! Such a consummate, workhorse veteran rudo. Atlantis in his prime is such a delight here - one of the greatest Tecnicos you ever did see. Felino & Dandy are both absolutely spectacular! But I think the heart of this thing is Wagner vs the young phenom that was Hector Garza!
The pacing, the flow, the slapstick, the payoffs & hitting the crescendo right at the perfect time is what makes this match magical. And the captain's rules element is a big part of it. So well done! A magical match!
